What's the best way to onboard a new field technician in FieldPulse?

Hi everyone! Wave

We want to make sure you're set up for success when it comes to bringing new technicians onto FieldPulse. We've seen some really creative approaches from our customers, and I'd love to open up the floor to hear what's working for your teams.

Quick questions to get us started:

  • How long does your typical FieldPulse onboarding take?
  • Do you lead with mobile app training, or start with the web dispatch side?
  • What are the biggest sticking points new hires run into?

Looking forward to learning from this community — there's no one-size-fits-all here, and we know your real-world experience is the best guide.

Feel free to share any templates, timelines, or lessons learned! I'll follow up with some resources we often recommend once the conversation gets rolling.

  • Split it. Two half-day tracks. Experienced techs skip the 'how to be a technician' parts and go straight to app mechanics. Green hires get the full week.

Process overhead is worth the time savings. A 15-year vet doesn't need to shadow for three days.

  • In my experience, the biggest failure point is assuming they'll ask for help when stuck. They won't. They'll fake it or fall behind.

We now mandate a check-in at 2 hours, 4 hours, and end of day for the first week. Not optional. Catches problems before they compound.

Also — and this is field-level practical that no one mentions — make sure their phone is charged and they know where the charger is. Sounds stupid but it's ended more first days than I can count.

  • Sorry if this is a silly question, but how do you handle the paperwork side? We're a smaller company and I'm the one who does all the HR onboarding plus the FieldPulse training, and I feel like I'm either rushing through the app stuff or the company policy stuff, and I'm not sure which one should take priority. Our last hire I definitely spent too much time on benefits enrollment and not enough on the mobile app and she was really struggling her first week out in the field, so I want to get this right next time. Also does anyone have a checklist I could borrow or adapt? I tried to build one but I'm not sure if I'm covering everything. Thanks so much in advance!!

  • Lindsey, not a silly question at all — this is one of the most common challenges we hear, especially in growing teams where one person wears multiple hats.

From what we've seen work well: separate the HR/policy block from the FieldPulse functional training. They use different parts of the brain, and trying to blend them creates exactly the tension you're describing.

I'll follow up with you directly with a template checklist you can adapt — we'd love to help you find the right balance there.
