Overview
A work order is the central record of a job in FieldPulse. This article describes the complete process for creating a work order and assigning it to one or more technicians.
Creating a New Work Order
To create a work order:
- Navigate to Work Orders in the left sidebar.
- Select New Work Order in the top-right corner.
- Enter the customer information. You may select an existing customer or create a new customer during this step.
- Specify the Service Type, Location, and Scheduled Date/Time.
- Add any initial notes, attachments, or checklist templates as needed.
- Select Create Work Order.
The work order is created with status Draft until it is assigned.
Assigning a Work Order
Assignment can occur during creation or afterward. To assign:
- Open the work order detail view.
- Locate the Assigned Technicians field.
- Select the technician or technicians from the dropdown list. Only technicians with Active status and available work hours are displayed.
- Select Save.
Once assigned, the work order status changes to Scheduled (if a future date) or Dispatched (if immediate). The assigned technician receives a notification according to their configured preferences.
Assignment Considerations
Technician Availability
The system checks technician availability against their configured work hours and existing assignments. Conflicts are flagged but do not prevent assignment. See Setting Technician Availability and Work Hours for configuration details.
Multiple Technicians
A single work order may be assigned to multiple technicians. For detailed guidance, see Assigning Multiple Technicians to a Single Work Order.
Skill Matching
Technician skills and certifications are displayed in the assignment dropdown if Skill Tracking is enabled in your account settings. This is optional and configurable by administrators.
