How often do your techs update job status in real time vs. end of day?

So I've been doing this electrical work for about 12 years now, and I've used a bunch of different systems. FieldPulse is fine, but here's my question — how often are your guys actually updating job status in real time?

In my experience, the dispatchers want everything updated instantly, but when you're up on a ladder dealing with live wires, you're not pulling out your phone every five minutes. My crew tends to batch it — mark everything at the end of the day or during lunch breaks. Seems to work fine.

But I keep hearing from management that we're "not utilizing the real-time features." Is this actually a problem for anyone else, or just us?

  • We had this tension too. Here's what actually worked:

    • Set expectations with dispatch: status updates at job start, job complete, and if running >30 min behind
    • Turned off all the mid-job status change notifications — noise without value
    • Tracked completion rate instead of update frequency

My techs were getting dinged for "low engagement" when they were just working. We redefined what "good" looks like and the complaints stopped.
